Jobless up to 9034
There were 9034 persons registered as unemployed at the end of October, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Gordon) yesterday. This is a slight increase on the 8963 registered at the middle of October.
There were 8008 employed on special work schemes at the end of October, a decrease of 139 on the midmonth figure. Included in the registered unemployed were 33 university students and 494 schoolleavers.
' The resumption of work in the freezing industry has still to be reflected in a reduction of those registered as unemployed and the numbers employed on special work at the end of October, when these statistics were compiled.” Mr Gordon said.
Vacancies recorded with the Labour Department increased from 1195 to 1445.
There were 4863 persons being paid unemployment benefits at the end of October, compared with 4543 at mid-October.
