Musical M.P. not in concert
PA Wellington Constant whistling by a Labour member during speeches by Government members in Parliament on Thursday evening drew a response from the Acting Junior Government Whip, Mr R. L. G. Talbot.
Mr Talbot, in a point of order, drew the attention of the Acting Chairman of Committees (Mr J. F. Luxton) to a member of the Opposition “who is now hiding behind his evening paper,” a reference to the member for Western Maori (Mr K. T. Wetere).
He said that the member had been whistling all evening while Government members had spoken in the Estimates debate. Mr Luxton said that the levels of conversation in the House had been so high that he had been unable to hear any whistling “but if I hear it, I will tell him to stop.” Mr R. W. Prebble (Lab., Auckland Central): Ask him to withdraw his whistle.
