Long failed to better home mark
David Long (Canterbury) might have equalled the New Zealand 400 m hurdles record in the Pacific Conference Games athletics trial at Auckland last Saturday but his time was not good enough to better his province’s standard. In one of the sport’s more unusual anomalies, Long and Chris Strange (Waikato) will be regarded as the co-holders of the national resident record of 52.25ec.
But the official Canterbury mark is 51.955ec, recorded by Rendell McIntosh during the 1974 Commonwealth Games at Queen Elizabeth II Park. Mclntosh covered the distance in 51.955ec but apparently his feat was not recognised until it was too late for all of the appropriate details to be forwarded to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association.
Perhaps Long’s selection, along with that of Strange, for the Pacific Games in Canberra early next month will be sufficient compensation.
