Quiet Australian market
Australian sharemarkets closed the week on a subdued note yesterday. BHP ended the week at 560 c, no change for the day, but 12c down on the week.
The announcements that Esso-BHP was going ahead with the Snapper gas field development in Bass Strait barely ruffled the market. Among major industrials, 'ENT fell 4c to 101 c on rumours, unsubstantiated by the time trading ended, that it was offloading its Ansett shares. Ansett fell 2c to 138 c. CSR gained 4c to 298 c, while the retailers and banks were mainly steady. SYDNEY
