Navy still shuffling top posts

Commodore D. J. Cheney, a former commander of the frigate Canterbury, has been appointed Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Policy).

The appointment is the latest in the series of reshuffles amongst Naval staff of Defence headquarters. Recent appointments include a new Chief of Naval Staff, a new deputy chief, and a new Commodore, Auckland. Commodore Cheney joined the Royal Navy in 1944, and transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1951.

He has commanded H.M.N.Z.S. Rotoiti and H.M.N.Z.S. Blackpool, and was in command of H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury when she sailed to Mururoa Atoll to protest against the French nuclear tests in 1973.

Before taking up his present position as Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, last year, he had been interim maritime adviser to the Singapore Government.
