Jaycees going to Johannesburg

Sir, — The reduction in the number of Jaycees going to Johannesburg as the result of political blackmail by some African countries is regrettable. None of these States has a standard of living anywhere near as high as that of the black man in the Republic of South Africa. They will now be encouraged to carry on with oppression while continuing to attack the republic. The racist apologists for that horror of Africa — the onepartv State — will be delighted. These one-party States, which form the majority of the blackmailing countries, have no democracy, massive unemployment, famine, and a death rate for babies between 25 and 40 per cent as opposed to the 10 per cent in the republic. The major regret is that more young New Zealanders will not now see the conditions in the republic, especially the Bantustans, and so realise that New Zealand protesters’ anti-South Africa propaganda is a load of rubbish. — Yours, etc., A. C. R. ELDERTON. October 28, 1977.
