’Child bribe’-parents
The supplementary family benefit allowance of $25 per child was labelled a “child bribe” by some Christchurch parents last evening. The extra money would be useful as Christmas approached but it would be quickly eat eh un by rising costs, they said. “The handout shows the same panic gestures as Mr Rowling’s measures before the 1975 election,” said Mr M. K. Edwards, a Spreydon solo parent with two children.
Mr M. A. Rlckerby, of Heathcote, the father of three young girls, said the $25 allowance would certainly help retailers at Christmas. “But it is a blatant votecatcher — there is no doubt about that.” Other parents said the $25 would be “quite a help,” especially to families with several young children. Many of these families had only one wage-earner, and most needed help of some kind.
