Nominations for Lyttelton seat

Several familiar names are among the nine Labour nominees for the Lyttelton electorate. On the top of the list is Mr N. G. Pickering, the former Mayor of Christchurch, who was narrowly defeated for the mayoralty in 1974 and has since become a member of the Local Government Commission. Mr Pickering was member of Parliament for St Albans from 1957 to 1960. Other nominees include two Christchurch city councillors, Mrs Mollie Clark and Mr D. C. Close. Mrs Clark was an unsuccessful nominee for the St Albans seat. She has also probably been nominated for the Papanui electorate, where she was the 1972 Labour candidate. Labour’s unsuccessful Mayoral candidate this year, Mr H. A. Clark, is another nominee. It is believed he also seeks nomination for the Papanui seat. Another unsuccessful bidder for the St Albans seat, Mr L. J. Knowles, is in the Lyttelton race. He is TVl’s Christchurch news editor. A new Lyttelton Borough Council member, Mr P. Sheehan, has been nominated for Lyttelton, with Mrs Ann Hercus, deputy chairman of the Commerce Commission. Other nominees are Mr A. Graham and Mr R. Lowe. A November 19 selection meeting will determine the Lyttelton candidate. In Papanui, the Labour Electorate Committee has still not divulged the 14 nominations on itg list.
