Newsprint carrier limps back to yard
The first of Tasman Pulp and Paper’s fleet of new newsprint carriers, the Tasman Venture, is making her way back to Japan, after fire broke out in her engine room this week. The Tasman Venture was only two days out on her delivery voyage to New Zealand — crewed and managed by the Union Steam Ship Company — when the fire broke out. There were no injuries and the crew was able to bring the fire under control, but it took about 24 hours to clean up the engine-room before the main engines could be started again. The Tasman Venture is going back to the shipyard at Kagoshima where she was built. She will be fully repaired, and it is not known how long this will take.
