Japan may not want chips

P A Nelson Japan may stop importing wood chips in favour of processed pulp, according to the president of the Tokai Pulp Company, Ltd (Mr Shigesada Hibino).

He is in Nelson for the Japan-New Zealand Businessmen’s Conference and to discuss future prospects with local timber-produc-ing concerns. Mr Hibino said it was a possibility that the volume of wood chips exported from Nelson may soon be phased down because of a world trend towards home processing of raw materials before export, and because of a

planned change in his company's manufacturing procedure and product range. Mr Hibino said it was a world trend that governments were coming to the conclusion that their own timber industries would benefit more from processing the raw materials themselves rather than exporting them for processing overseas.

“My company recognises this situation and realises that we must soon think about importing processed material, rather than raw material such as chips, if our business links are to continue successfully."
