Aust. markets remain firm
Australian sharemarkets ended the week on a firm note yesterday, with major events being the election announcement and the lastest moves to lower official interest rates.
Banking stocks were among the better performers and the N.S.W. rose 10c to 550 c with the announcement of a big profit increase. The N.S.W’s 53 per cent-owned 'offshoot, A.G.C.. closed steady at 160 c despite its record profit announcement. I Going against the trend of Ithe bankers, the National Bank lost 4c to 286 c. After big price rises early in the week with the latest round of interest rate cuts, there was a pause for consolidation. Price variations were not as great as early in the week.
