Tisdalls win table tennis
Two A grade players. Michael Hamel and Alan Renwick, combined to win the Christchurch business firms’ table tennis tournament for the sports firm, Tisdalls. at the Selwyn Street hall last evening. In the final. Tisdalls beat the Department of Statistics, represented by Ling Nan Ming and Terry Papps. 3-2. The result of the match hinged on the outcome of the doubles. which Hamel and Renwick won in three games. Ironically, the pair won the match when Ling served into the net. Earlier. Ling had beaten Hamel, 21-16, 22-20, in an exciting. fast-flowing match. Ling’s better control probably won him the match against his younger opponent
Each team playing in the tournament was made up of representatives of various firms around Christchurch and in section one usually included one player of A grade class and one from the lower grades. Sunnyside finished in third position with the Armagh Bookshop pair of Denis Kalin and lan Urquhart. In section two. Spalding won the competition with 11 points from Sterling Pharmaceuticals with 10. Watersiders with nine and the Armagh Bookshop on eight. Spalding also won section three, with 14 points, with Fletchers Steel, the Ministry of Transport. U.E.B. Industries. Sanitarium Health Foods and Radio Avon filling the minor places.
