Policemen and their private lives

Sir, — For the first time in 40-odd years as a New Zealander by birth, I am ashamed of my country. We are coming to a pretty pass if employers can dictate the private lives we lead. I refer to the suggestion by the Commissioner of Police that policemen living in de facto relationships should be disciplined. I have always understood that the Church was the keeper of morals and the police keepers of law and order. I am not an advocate of de facto relationships, but I see this suggestion as just one more step to complete dictatorship in our once free New Zealand. — Yours, etc., ANNE L. BROCKHURST.
