No golds for red wines

The premium red wines, which often win gold medals and championships awards, failed to gain anything above a silver in judging at the national wine competition continued at the Chateau Tongariro. However, three gold medals went to the fortified wine specialist, G. and F. Mazuran, of Henderson, for sweet and semi-sweet sherries. Another, also for semi-sweet or sweet sherries, went to Riverhead Glenburn Wines. A fourth gold medal represented a breakthrough for Riesling Sylvaner whites which have been the subject of intense effort for years without winning high awards. The gold went to Penfolds Autumn Riesling 76, a freeze-concentrated wine, and the 1977 version won a silver. A fifth gold medal went to SYC Totara vineyard at Thames for a regular dry sherry. The flor style dry sherries, glamour entrants of recent years, failed to produce more than a single silver. There were some good silvers in the commercial A category, which is for wines in quantity production.

Wines classed as commercial A must be held by makers in at least 5000 gallon quantities and be on the market. Commercial B wines require a holding of at least 1000 gallons.
