Queen wins owner award
NZPA London The Queen has been voted Owner of the Year in the annual Derby Award votes, by the British Race Writers’ Association.
Dunfermline's triumphs in the Oaks and St Leger, gave the Queen the verdict in her jubilee year over Mr Robert Sangster. whose colours were carried with distinction by the Derby winner, The' Minstrel, and "Alleged, victor] lin Sunday’s Prix de L’Arc de! jTriomphe. Willie Carson, who rode j Dunfermline to her two clas-j sic successes, beaded the flat-jockey’s poll ahead of Lester Piggott, but the pendulum went the other way in the vote for the flat trainer with Vincent O’Brien getting the better of Dick Hern. Tommy Stack, who rode Red Rum to that horse’s third Grand National victory as well as regaining his championship, had a very big advantage over Paddy Broderick for the jumpIjockey award. ! But Red Rum’s trainer I Donald McCain had to give; 'best in the jumping trainers' vote to Peter Easterby who did so well with the dual Champion Hurdler, Night Nurse.
: This is the first time that previous winners have been eligible for a second award, and Carson, O’Brien and Stack were all adding to iprevibus victories.
