The New Zealand staler, Tom's Mate, has not yet qualified for tne Caulfield Cup. Tom's Mate won his last three races before leaving for Australia and his connections thought he had fulfilled the Cup ballot condition that a horse must win at least 512.000 after the issue of weights to qualify for a start. But because of the exchange rates, he was alightiy more than S4OO short of the mark in terms of Australian currency. Fourth placing in today’s Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield would qualify Toms Mate for a start in the Cup. but to be sure of gaining a place in the field he has to win the race.—Melbourne.
