Lord Elworthy to retire
NZPA London A New Zealand-born life peer, Lord Elworthy, will retire from the post of Constable of Windsor Castle and will return to New Zealand.
Lord Elworthy, who is 66, said yesterday that he would leave the Queen’s service next year and retire to his family property at Gordon’s Valley, near Timaru. “I have spent a lifetime in the service of the Crown,” he said. “I felt it was time I stepped down.” He will leave Windsor today for a brief New Zealand holiday. “I have been back to New Zealand 28 times since I first came to Britain,” he said. “After this week’s trip, the next time I go back will be for good.” Lord Elworthy went to Britain in the early 19305, and was educated at Marlborough and Cambridge, where he graduated in law. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1933, and after war service in Bomber Command became Chief of the Air Staff and later Chief of the Defence Staff with the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force — the service’s highest.
