Pele plays last match
NZPA New York The incomparable Pele has played his last professional soccer in New York '-— an emotional game between the only two clubs he has served, the New York Cosmos and Santos of Brazil.
Peie, aged 37, known the world over as the king of soccer, wept as he ran a farewell lap of honour to deafening cheers from a crowd of 75,000 people, including the world heavyweight boxing champion, Muhammad All.
The night belonged to Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele’s real name. Among the distinguished footballers to salute him were the captains of the last three world cup winners — Franz Beckenbauer, of West Germany, Carlos Alberto, of Brazil, and Bobby Moore, of England. The match itself was won, 2-1, by the New York Cosmos. Pele played for the Cosmos in the first half and for Santos in the second.
