No drink, tobacco; hard work
P A Hastings A Canterbury-born cen a t.enarian, Mr John Thomas Dally, has died in a home in Havelock North, onlyfour days after celebrating his 101st birthday. Mr Daily’s parents came from Cornwall, and settled in Canterbury in January, 1869. Mr Dally was born at Malvern and spent his boyhood living with his family on the Longbeach Estate of John Grigg, near Ashburton. At 17, he went north to work as a contract bush clearer, and later farmed. When Mr Dally turned 99 he said that the formula for long life was hard work done without grumbling, and no smoking or drinking.
Mr Dally is survived by a son. three daughters, 12 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
