Drake’s hopes burst
A burst tyre on the fifteenth lap put the favourite
Doug Drake, out of the feature race when the Christchurch Kart Club held its annual car park championships at the Hornby Working Men’s Club.
The kart club conducted the championships in conjunction with the Hornby Festival Committee and a good crowd watched some spectacular racing from the 20 drivers. Twelve drivers — who qualified after contesting three heats — contested the main race and Drake led from the start until his puncture.
In the closing stages there was a great tussle between Robin Heron, Dean Hancock, and Colin Goss but Heron got to the finish first by a few metres.
The supporting races were marked by some very spirited driving, with karts up on one wheel in attempts to get better placings. Drake made up for his earlier mishap by winning the All-in, the last race on the programs. Results:
Branston Auto Services Canterbury car-park championships (25 laps).—R. Heron 1. D. Hancock 2. C. Goss 3.
Blackwell Motors (Hornby) Allfn grand prix (15 laps).—D. Drake 1, P. Crichton 2, R. Tapper 3. Drivers to record wins in. supporting and qualifying races were: Drake 4. M Anderson 3, L. Verhoven, Heron and Goss 2, Hancock, W. Pettigrew, R. Tapper, P. Crichton and D. Horwell
