Cameron fine third

Matched aginst some of Australia’s best long-distance runners, the Canterbury veteran marathon champion, Don Cameron (St Martins), took a creditable third place from a big field in the N.S.W. 50 mile road race championship in Sydney on Sunday.

The winner was Tom Gillis, who scored his third successive win in the record time of 5 hours 48 minutes 15 seconds — an Australian record. The second man in was Dr Hugh Deamley (The "Flying Doctor”) in 6hr 9min 56sec.

In spite of being handicapped with a suspected tom thigh muscle in the early stages of the race Cameron came through cour-

ageously to overtake the fourth man, Les Gapps, in the last few hundred metres for a time of 6hr 55min 15sec, beating Gapps by 20sec.

Because of the testing course, which included long hills in hot conditions, only 14 of the 32 starters completed the run. The oldest man in the race, Jim Lee, finished well in Bhr 9min 46sec for fourteenth placing. Cameron will be one of the leading Canterbury runners in New Zealand’s first 100 km run, around the Port Hills on Saturday.

The 100 km race will start at Cathedral Square at 6 a.m. and the runners will

move along Colombo Street and up the Cashmere Hills to the junction of Dyers Pass and Hackthome Roads, and then down again to the foot of Hackthome, following through Halswell out to Bankside and back to Cashmere, reaching the 33km mark. Then the runners climb to the Sign of the Kiwi, turn right along the Summit Road to Gebbies Pass, Teddington, Governor’s Bay, Cass Bay, past the 63km mark on to Lyttelton, up Evans Pass, turning left at the summit, back to the Sign of the Kiwi, downhill to the foot of Dyers Pass Road, then along Cashmere Road and Hoon Hay Road, finishing at the Hillmorton School.
