Church’s glowing murals

' By

RITA THOMAS,

Visitors to Canberra should not miss the opportunity of visiting one of Australia’s most unusual churches — the Serbian Orthodox Church in the suburb of Forrest. This golden brick building is adorned by glowing murals of fabulous beauty, similar to those of Michelangelo and including his version of the Last Supper. They are the result of 10 years work by 81-year-old Mr Karl Matzek. He says he will go on adding to it for as long as he lives. Visitors are spellbound

at the beauty of the paintings which glow with vibrant colour. The ceiling is dominated by the crucifixion scene, but the Transfiguration and the Resurrection of Lazarus, are also portrayed. Born in Austria, Mr Matzek emigrated to Australia 20 years ago after exhibiting his work in Chicago, New York, Paris, Mexico, Buenos Aires, Moscow, Rome, and Berlin. “I offered to paint murals on the walls and

ceiling free of charge just for the sheer pleasure it gives me,” he said. “It is a creation of pure love and I let my inspiration flow. “I am fortunate in having modern paints whereas the ancient artists had to use what was available. “The oils I use will last for centuries.

“However, they are very expensive and have to be imported from the Netherlands, so I rely on the generosity of the hundreds of tourists and visitors to enable me to continue with my work. I have spent all my savings on this project,” said Mr Matzek.

Working slowly and painstakingly, Mr Matzek does not confine his painting to religious scenes. One entire wall depicts the Serbian-Turkish battle of Kosova, which was fought in 1839. He has also copied Rafael’s painting in the Vatican of the battle of St Constantine.
