The rate burden

Sir, — Every year rates rise astronomically, far in excess of inflation. Distribution of rates is still based on land value, not on capital value. Water-rating is an elaborate exploitation. Payment of rates by instalment does not save the ratepayer money. Rates are not evenly distributed throughout the metropolitan area. It is so easy to spend other people’s money; many prospective councillors seem unaware there is a recession. The council’s wage liabilities exceed the total rate collected. Through prolonged neglect, many roads and streets are no longer safe for cyclists. One cannot get an “ordinary” water connection — it has to be “extraordinary”. The council indulges in unfair competition with private enterprise. Funds should be diverted from luxury items to provide essentials — i.e. creches, etc. — Yours, etc., J. A. D. ANDERSON.
