Shipping News Missile ship to visit Lyttelton tomorrow
There will be bubble sum i •plenty in Lyttelton tomorrow when the U.S.S. Somers sails in. The 4000 tonne guided-missile destroyer will spend five days in port. The visit may bring back old memories—Canterbury has not seen a U.S. Navy warship since 1971. U.S. Naval authorities are not saying exactly why the ship is coming to Lyttelton, but the object of the exercise seems to be public relations, and rest and recreation for her several hundred crewmen. At the same time the U.S.S. Benjamin Stoddert will be visiting Dunedin, and the U.S.S. Richard S. Edwards will be calling at Auckland. The Somers Is attached to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. She was built in 1959. and is the sixth ship of the line to bear the name, the first being a schooner which fought under Commodore Perry on Lake Erie and Lake Huron during the capture of the British squadron in 1813.
