Miles forfeits bail

A Christchurch businessman, Kevin John Miles, aged 29. failed to answer to his bail in the Supreme Court yesterday on charges of having LSD and cannabis worth $40,000 for supply.

At the request of the Crown prosecutor. Mr N. W. Williamson, Mr Justice Somers certified that Miles’s bail bond was forfeited. This means that proceedings can be taken against the two persons who acted as sureties to have all or part of the bonds they put up forfeited to the Crown.

Miles, the former proprietor of a jeans shop in Christchurch, was granted bail by Mr Justice Roper on a bond of $5OOO and two sureties of $5OOO each. He was bailed after a jury failed to reach verdicts at a trial held in June. A new trial was ordered and Mr M. A. Bungay, of Wellington, who appeared for Miles, said that he would be overseas for some months.

The officer in charge of the case. Detective Sergeant A. E. Harris, has filed affidavits in the Supreme Court which state that inquiries bv the police have established that Miles fled to Australia with his 17-year-old girl friend on September 18 after he had changed his name by deed poll.
