League cup to Maoris
The New Zealand Maoris rugby league team retained the Pacific Cup when it beat Western Australia, 36-12, in the tournament grand final at Auckland.
After the match, seven Maori players — Johir Wilson, Ray Harris, Eddie Orchard, Dennis Key, Murray Netzler, lan Bell and Warren Rangi — were included in a South Pacific squad chosen during the cup series.
The other selections were Martin Ridley (Western Australia), Robert Greathead
(Papua New Guinea), Dave McFee (Victoria), John Fielding (Papua New Guirrea), Brian Allia (Northern Territory), Bob Dowie (Northern Territory), John Wagambie (Papua New Guinea), Alan Rero (Papua New Guinea), Alec Lockley (Western Australia) and Tama Gau (Papua New Guinea). Wagambie was chosen as "player of the tournament." In one of the curtainraisers the Northern Zone ur?der-18 side beat its
southern counter part, 10-7, after having trailed by three points at half-time. Scorers.— Maoris 36 (D. Uluave two, W. Rangi two, P. Sua, M. Netzler, T. Toloa, I. Bell tries; J. Wilson six goals) beat Western Australia 12 (I. Walls, J. Adams tries; Walls three goals). Northern Zone under-18 10 (T. Waitai, R. Scanlan tries; D. McDonald two goals) beat Southern 7 (W. Dwyer three goals; M. Belcher field goal).
