McHarg out of side
Rodger McHarg, the Canterbury goal-keeper, has been omitted from the New Zealand hockey squad for the second test against Australia at Porritt Park on Saturday and the tests in Australia on Sunday and September 24.
McHarg has been replaced by the Auckland goal-keeper, Maurice Marquet, but McHarg’s omission is not because he is being made a scapegoat for last Saturday’s 1-2 loss in the first test at
Auckland. Australia scored in the last minute and the ball eluded McHarg and trickled over the goal-line.
The New Zealand coach, Brian Maunsell, said last evening the change was the result of long-term thinking and not made on last Saturday’s result.
“Rodger is not being made a scapegoat," he said. “We (the selectors) wanted to confirm the qualities of Maurice.” The selectors viewed Marquet yesterday and on Tuesday, when he played for the New Zealand Invitation team against Australia and New Zealand.
“His performance confirmed thoughts we gained about him at the national tournament.”
It is likely that Marquet will be in the XI to play on Saturday. Unless the
selectors had this in mind, it is unlikely they would havt changed their squad. The squad is Marquet, Lei Wilson; Tony Ineson (cap tain), Greg Dayman: Trevot Laurence, Paul Ackerley jSelwyn Maister, Keith Gorjringe, Alan Chesney; Thul Borren, Jeff Archibald, Alar Mclntyre, Barry Maister, Ramesh Patel, and Arthul Parkin.
Marquet’s inclusion bringi the Auckland contingent to seven players, one mon than Canterbury. However Marquet is a former Christchurch player. He was i member of the Linwooi High School team. The team will train thii moring at Wigram and th< final XI for the test will b« named tomorrow evening The Australians meet Wellington today and arrive it Christchurch tonight.
