‘Union’ in name only

J An Auckland-based mortgage company calling itself "Union Agency” is still active in Christchurch, but has nothing to do with the trade union movement. An executive member of the Canterbury Trades Council, Mr W. B. Brown, says that some people are still under the impression that the agency is somehow connected with the trade union movement. “It has neither the blessing nor the sponsorship of the trade union movement." said Mr Brown. He said that the matter had been taken up by the district council and the Federation of Labour, and affiliated unions had been advised that the agency had no support from the trade unions. The company sends unsolicited letters to members of- trade unions, together with reply-paid envelopes The names and addresses have apparently been obtained from electoral rolls.
