Welcome to tourists ' vital’

PA Auckland Tourism now ranks as a giant in foreign-exchange earnings, investment, and employment, according to the Minister of Tourism (Mr Lapwood). He told an Auckland National Travel Association 1977 courtesy awards evening that this had imposed tremendous demand on both manpower and facilities. It could not be assumed, however, that by building yet another hotel by a lake, thermal geyser, or mountain wonder that overseas tourists would continue to queue up to fill the new accommodation.

“Naturally, they will only go to, and return to, or encourage their friends to visit, the places where they are made welcome,” Mr Lapwood said.

A Tourist and Publicity Department survey had shown that personal recommendation was the decisive factor in influencing Americans to come to New Zealand. “Personal recommendations obviously would not have been made if we had not made our guests welcome,” Mr Lapwood said. “This spirit of friendliness is just as vital as any scenic wonder.”
