N.Z. plumbers

Sir, — In response to Cr Bruce Britten’s statement (“The Press”, August 30) that “New Zealand would be producing the worst plumbers in the world,” I would suggest that he consider the degree of technical training, both theoretical and practical, required by the provisions of the Apprentices Act, 1948, and in particular the requirements of the apprenticeship order governing the plumbing and gasfitting industry. Having spent the last four years as an apprentice, endeavouring to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for registration as a qualified plumber, I object strongly to the label that Cr Britten has attached to the plumbing industry. As an apprentice with a responsible attitude to my trade, I find the implications of Cr Britten’s remark quite appalling. — Yours, etc..

M. W. DWAN August 30, 1977.
