Boilermen to stop work
Employers in Canterbury, Otago, and Southland have made a pay offer to engine drivers in these areas which will be considered by Christchurch members of the Canterbury, Otago, and Southland Engine Drivers’ Union at a stop-work meeting this afternoon.
The Canterbury secretary (Mr R. H. Caffell) said that the offer was not a national one.
He would not disclose details of the offer except to say that it was probably what the branch wanted. The southern branch has been negotiating with southern employers during the last month about the terms of an agreement. Members of the national
i executive of the union will I meet in the morning and attend the meeting of union members in the afternoon, to answer questions. Mr Caffell said that ar-j rangements had been made in the various plants in Christchurch to ensure that boilers would be kept going while the meeting was held.
