Basketball

Canterbury and Auckland were still leading in section one of the national under 20 women’s basketball championships In Rotorua yesterday. Otago and Nelson remained undefeated in section two. Results were:— Section one: Auckland 65, Panmure 50; Canterbury 91, Wairarapa 48; Auckland 80, Walrarapa 22; Canterbury 83, Wanganui 50. Section two: Otago 66, Tauranga 62: Wellington 68, Bay of Plenty 49; Otago 53, Bay of Plenty 42; Nelson 50, Wellington 33. Canterbury became the 1977 New Zealand junior men’s basketball champion last night when it beat Hamilton. 63-58. in the final. Hockey

The Canterbury Hatch Cup team will be seeking to avenge the defeat of its senior team in the Challenge Shield final last week-end when it meets Auckland in the final of the national primary schoolboys' tournament this morning. ’ Auckland scraped into the final yesterday when it beat Ashburton, 1-0, in a closely-fought semifinal. Auckland scored the only goal midway through the first half, but both teams had chances to score goals in the second half. Canterbury scored two goals in the first -three minutes against South Canterbury in the other semi-final and a third after 15 minutes. The last of the junior soccer tournaments, the Coca Cola under 16 event, begins in Christchurch on Monday. The tournament will be held at Queen Elizabeth H Park on four pitches outside the main stadium. A total of 12 teams are taking part, including two from Canterbury, and the final will take place on Thursday afternoon. Teams competing are: Otago, Franklin, Hutt Valley, Waikato, Taranaki, Southland, Mana, Manawatu, Auckland Secondary Schools, Auckland and Canterbury A and B.

Waikato in the boys and Wellington in the girls loomed as possible winners of the New Zealand inter-districts junior teams’ squash championships at the end of the first day’s play of the four-day tournament in Whangarei.
