World XV trounced

NZPA-Reuter Cape Town

The invitation world rugby XV was trounced, 56-26, by Western Province yesterday, an even wider losing margin than it suffered against the Springboks on Saturday. The second half turned into a rout after Western Province led 26-16 at halftime.

The world team, which lost, 24-45, to the Springboks in Pretoria on Saturday, lacked team understanding and despite solid play by the New Zealand No. 8, Alan Sutherland, was invariably beaten to the loose ball. Western Province scored 11 tries, six of which were converted.

Argentina’s Alejandro I ravaglini scored two tries for the world XV and the Welshman Gareth Edwards, Hugo Porta (Argentina) and Sutherland got one each. Porta kicked three conversions.

Edwards gave his backline every opportunity, but the fly-half Porta played indifferently.
