Flood of containers
The flood-tide of containers is beginning to have big effects on patterns of overseas shipping through New Zealand ports. Figures given by the Waterfront Industry Commission for the four months ended May 31 show marked drops in conventional shipping, balanced by significant increases in container traffic.
Conventional ships made fewer calls and handled 12.9 per cent less cargo than in the same period last year, says the commission. At the same time the introductiony of the Japanese container service and the extension of the British and European services meant container tonnages rose 65.7 per cent. Although the daily throughput was higher, delays — especially while waiting for berths — resulted in a deterioration of turn-round time for container ships. Bulk carriers were not affected by the tussle for cargoes between conventional and container ships — bulk carrier tonnage rose 25.5 per cent, mainly because of a recovery in bulk timber exports.
