Shop to be rebuilt

Mitchell’s Colombo Street furniture shop, which was gutted by fire on the night of August 1, will be rebuilt. Rebuilding will be a "massive job,” according to the manager of Sydenham Park Car Sales Ltd, (Mr R. A. Silvester) whose firm owns the building. The estimated cost of between $350,000 and $450,000 is very close to the cost of a new building.

Before reconstruction starts, all internal floors and structures and the roof will be removed, leaving only the existing outer brick walls. Reinforced concrete walls will then be poured inside the existing walls in order to meet the present building code regulations. Working plans for the rebuilding will take several months to draw up and then tenders will be called. The rebuilding may take 18 months to complete, said Mr Silvester.

J. M. Mitchell, Ltd, would be glad to get back into its old premises, said the secretary of the company (Mr B. Collins) last evening. At present the company was doing business from a temporary shop in Bath Street, adjacent to the gutted building, in premises previously used by Sydenham Park Car Sales as a store.

It is not known whether the other tenant in the building, the Stables Niteclub, is interested in moving back when the rebuilding is completed.
