Japan gets cycling gold

NZPA San Cristobal Japan won both gold and silver medals last night in the professional sprint and Cees Stam, of the Netherlands, won the gold medal in the professional motorpace before rain forced a suspension of competition at the World Cycling Championships.

Stam set an average speed of 66.265km/h in the one-hour event. The current world champion, Wilfried Peffgen (West Germany) was 75m behind when the gun sounded and took the silver medal. Italy's Pierto Algeri, 220 m back, took the bronze.
