No ski programme yet

From Tim Dunbar

Methven

No programme has yet been finalised for the Air New Zealand-Mount Hutt international ski-ing series but running the glamour slalom event tomorrow is now a strong possibility. If the change is made then spectators will have their first chance to see the world cup holder, Ingemar Stenmark, in action. Yesterday was spent preparing the downhill course at Mount Hutt for a race on Saturday but windblown snow created a major problem as it filled in cleared areas. "The snow was great for recreational ski-ing but the powder was deep and dry, making it impossible to pack properly,” said the chairman of the organising committee (Richard Johnson). No training was possible on the course, although the international stars were all able to get to the field for the first time in three days. At a team captains’ meeting last evening, the chief of

race (John Morris) said that a concerted effort would be required today if any further progress was to be made on the course. The snow "cat” was available all day for packing. The Australian coach (Martin Kerscher), suggested that activity be switched to preparation of the slalom course if the weather looked bad this morning.

The suggested revised programme allows for the slalom to be held tomorrow the giant slalom or. Saturday, and the downhill on Monday afternoon. A meeting of the race jurj will be held at 9 aun. todaj to decide whether to continue the downhill on Saturday as planned or tc put the new plan into operation.
