GREYHOUND RACING First bend will test Torrianna Charm

By 808 SCHUMACHER Tom Moss will no doubt breathe a sigh of relief if his fine bitch, Torianna Charm, safely negotiates the first bend in the Shep Stakes for novice greyhounds at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday.

Torianna Charm, winner of the South Island Challenge Cup and a consolation heat of the Fairchild sprint series this winter, has come to grief at her last two starts when favoured for the Rendezvous Kennels Stakes and South Island championship. However, both times the race was started in the front straight, and the trouble has cocurred at the notorious bend at the end of the top straight. Saturday’s feature event will be run over 800 m, the dogs leaving the traps in the back straight. The bottom bend seldom causes interference and Torianna Charm, especi a 11 y as she has drawn the inside box, should avoid strife. The Sandy Shane bitch was the fastest qualifier from the heats on Monday evening and she should gain a deserved win in the Shep event.

Master McGrath, which won the South Island championship at the last meeting, might be the dog to put Torianna Charm to the test. The Old HobbsTaradale dog won his heat and he impresses as a stayer of much potential. Last year he finished seond in the event to Hobbs Galore when it was run over 750 m.

Eileen McManus, a slow starter, should be suited by the distance race and could reach a place. The consistent Swift Princess, third in the South Island championship, should be thereabouts, and She’s-A-Sweetie and Grey Mist warrant respect after finishing second in their heats. The Wentworth Park open 350 m has drawn a talented field, and the start will be of great importance. Outa Bounds was half a second faster than Roaming Gazelle in winning his heat. He has a good box draw and should be hard to head.

Roaming Gazelle is a very swift dog and Man-O-War, resuming after a short spell, and Mark Lobell have the brilliance to overcome their wide draws. Fields are:—
