Petition on abortion

PA Wellington A petition from the Association of Social Workers asking for the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Bill to be referred to a Parliamentary select committee has been presented to Parliament. The association wants a special select committee to hear evidence on the bill from interested parties, and for the hearings to be open to the news media. The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has said it is not intended to refer the bill to a select committee because the Royal Commission, on whose recommendations it is based, has already heard submissions.

The petition presented yesterday by the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Templeton) is the third asking for the bill to go to a select committee.

The petitions go before the Parliamentary Petitions Committee, whose chairman is Mr L. C. Schultz (National, Coromandel). It was not immediately known when the petitions would be heard.
