Back at work

All staff involved in a walkout at the Ashburton Hotel three weeks ago are back at work after a meeting between Ashburton Licensing Trust representatives and Hotel Workers’ Union representatives at Ashburton yesterday. The Hotel Workers’ Union was represented by Messrs C. Mcßeady, G. Harding, and R. Lingard, and the Licensing Trust by Messrs B. Smallbone, C. Moody, and P. Y. Wylie. The chairman was Mr T. Skinner, an industrial mediator. A statement by the manager of the trust (Mr Moody) said that “after discussions it has been unanimously agreed that the waitress concerned shall continue in her present employment. All staff at the hotel have now

resumed normal duties.” The stop-work occurred when a chef at the Ashburton Hotel ordered a waitress out of his kitchen, and she was dismissed. After meetings between the union and the trust representatives, the waitress resumed work at the hotel and the chef was officially placed on leave.

Asked whether the chef had been reinstated in his former position, Mr Moody declined to comment beyond saying: “All staff involved in the dispute have resumed work.” Mr Mcßeady said that the chef had resumed work at the hotel, and that he had never been dismissed. Hotel staff had earlier demanded that the chef, Mr T. Pater|son, be dismissed before they returned to work.
