Speculative interest in oil and gold shares
An oil-find in South Australia, good news for gold stocks, and some company profit reports helped selected stocks perform well in otherwise quiet trading in Australia yesterday. The oil discovery in the Pedirka Basin made consortium partners Santos rise 53c to 233 c, Vagmas rise 8c to 40c, and Western Mining gain 5c to 132 c. Other oils were generally down.
Rising gold prices, and speculation that Western mining is planning to in crease its shareholding in Central Norseman Gold made the shares rise 50c to 530 c, a high for the year.
Kathleen Investments was up 3c to 165 c, but Queensland Mines and Peko fell. AAR recovered 5c to 180 c, and White Industries 13c to 150 c. Boral rose 13c to 215 c after a record profit and ai bonus issue.
Anderson Meat’s 335 c per share bid for Berrima Dis-
trict Meats saw no sales of ißerrima, but there was a [quote of 300 c after the last sale of 160 c. Anderson was (unchanged at 20c. I BHP closed steadv at 568 c, [but CSR fell 2c to‘3ooc. i TNT picked up 4c to 105 c | after recent unexplained [falls. The banks were steady or a cent down while the retailers were steady to a few' cents up.
