‘Mackenzie’ tonight
South Pacific Television’s five-part drama series, “The Mackenzie Affair,” most of which is set in the South Island, will begin tonight at 8 o’clock.
The programme tells the story of a Scottish shepherd who has long been an enigma in New Zealand history — a man branded as a common thief who gave his name to a vast, previously unexplored area but about whom surprisingly little is known. James McNeish studied the subject for five years and his reconstruction of the story shows that Mackenzie was the victim of one of the most glaring
miscarriages of justice in New Zealand history. It is on this “fictionalised” reconstruction that Scots writer, Alistair Bell based his script for the Scottish Television-South Pacific co-production. Directed by Joan Craft and produced by John Mcßae, “The Mackenzie Affair” was shot on location in Scotland and in New Zealand. The role of Jamie Mackenzie is played by Scottish actor, James Cosmo, one of the regulars in the series, “Warship." The first episode tonight is set in the Scottish highlands, where Jamie was a shepherd in 1846.
