20 hurt in carnival violence
NZPA London Notting Hill, a suburb of London, was quiet yesterday after a night of spasmodic violence. The trouble began after 50,000 people had enjoyed a day of music, dancing and fun at the start, of the twoday carnival. But as the bands and processions began to pack up, gangs of youths began running through the streets knocking down passers-by who were in their way, Scotland Yard said.
By midnight on Sunday 20 people had been hurt, 12 people arrested, and 100 offences reported including the looting of £lO,OOO worth of jewellery. Only one person was detained in hospital overnight — a teenager who was stabbed in the chest after ten youths, nine of them white, attacked him. Nearly a quarter of a million are expected to join the carnival today. Last year serious rioting marred the festival.
