Tip restrictions placed on rubbish firm
A waste-disposal firm will no longer be permitted to use the Paparua County Council’s rubbish tip unless it clears its past debts and pays in advance for further tipping.
The council’s finance committee heard yesterday' that Binmasta Disposals (1976), Ltd, owned the council $21,066 for dumping in the Carrs Road tip and that the matter had now been placed in the hands of the county solicitor. Cr W. J. Baker said that no private business could run up debts of this size. “I suggest they should not be allowed to use the pit unless the charge is prepaid, - ’ he said. Cr E. C. Britnell: “And that should include all the associated companies.” The County Engineer 'Mr J. D. Annan) said that the council had to be careful because it had given an undertaking in the Supreme Court that unless it had good reason to the contrary, it would allow the firm to use the pit. The council agreed to this when it sought an injunction to prevent the tipping of general rubbish into a shingle pit off Halswell Junction Road owned by A. M. Rhodes, Ltd. “We have bent over backwards with this firm,” said Cr Baker. “We have plenty of reason now for stopping them. We have even allowed them to use the dump when there were no council officers present. We have more than done our share.” The County Clerk (Mr B.)
W. Mooar) said it was not the engineer’s fault that the account had got so big. “It is my responsibility and I allowed it to go on because of the undertaking given to the Court.” “Weil, I’m very hot on this, Mr Mooar. I hope you won’t) let it happen again,” said Cr Baker. The committee asked the) engineer to check with the) county solicitor that the' council could prevent Bin-! masta from dumping rubbish until it had paid the out- j standing account and prepaid for further dumping, and to notify the firm by letter. |
