Historic ‘hospital’ opened

About 1750 people visited Shantytown for the opening of its latest addition, the Rewa Hospital, during a gala day on Saturday. An operating table is shown above.

The hospital was officially opened by the chair-

man of the New Zealand Medical Council (Mr N. F. Greenslade) who cut a surgical bandage across the front door with a scalpel to declare the building open. Mr Greenslade traced

the history of hospitals on the West Coast. He said the

Shantytown hospital was more than a museum: it also captured the atmosphere of a hospital at the turn of the century with many interesting exhibits. Mr Greenslade recalled the time when he was surgeon at the Grey Hospital and brought greetings from

several people who were unable to be at Shantytown for the ceremony. Other speakers were the convenor of the Rewa Hospital project (Dr B. M. Dallas) and the “Mayor of Shantytown” (Mr A. L. Sutherland).
