Runway plan not 'official’

By

CEDRIC MENTIPLAY

The Government has not yet heard officially of a proposal by which the runway at Wellington Airport could be extended without reclamation work, as suggested in "The Press” yesterday. “The Ministry of Transport is looking at all possibilities.” the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) said yesterday. “This is just one of them. It has not been formally proposed to the Government.” A Civil Aviation spokesman said that the so-called red-star rating given to the airport (along with a number of United States airports) had no relationship to the length of runway but was related only to pilot aids. Ministry of Works sources say that, because of the present economic position, the lengthening of the Wellington runway does not have a high priority.

The proposal to extend both ways without further reclamation is described as “eminently practicable”
