Mason slates N.Z. plays

PA Wellington New Zealand Theatre took a roasting from the adjudicators of the weekend finals of the New Zealand Theatre Federation’s one-act play competition in Wellington. No award was made in the competition for original oneact plays run in conjunction with the festival. Bruce Mason, who read the eight scripts submitted. said the standard was deplorable. “I can’t understand how the standard dropped so much in a year,” he said. “Last year the standard was so high.” A Timaru group, the South Canterbury Drama League, was awarded the “Book of Honour” in the finals.

The group presented “The Love of Don Perlimplin,” by Fredrico Lorca, directed by Dawn Somerville. The ajudicator, Mr Tony Taylor, said the presentation of the Lorca play had the most complete concept of what he had been looking for. However, he said there was a “lack of daring” in the final presentations. “If anything came out of the finals, it was a possible lack of strength in directing,” said Mr Taylor.

“There seemed no ability to take the play by the throat and shake it into full and complete life with the complete use of the stage and theatre arts.
