Basketball The New Zealand under 20 boys’ basketball championships opened in Nelson yesterday at the Stoke Stadium and play was of a high calibre. One upset came when the highly-fancied Canterbury team went down to Otago in a thrilling encounter. Results were: Otago 80, Hutt Valley 58; Otago 68, Canterbury 63; Palmerston North 67, Nelson 56; Panmure 78, Palmerston North 54; Hamilton 85, Napier 56; North Shore 93, Wellington 73. Miss Burn has had a successful tournament season to date, her wins including three titles in the Adidas Canterbury junior closed tournament, three in the Canterbury open junior championships, two in the South Island junior championships and the singles plate at the South Island open championships. Hockey Six teams had two wins on the first day of the Hatch Cup primary schoolboys’ hockey tournament at Porritt Park yesterday. The holder of the cup, Canterbury, was the only team in section A to win twice. It scored 21 goals and conceded one. In section B three South Island teams — North Otago, Ashburton and Nelson — had two wins, and in section C Auckland and South Canterbury were the sides with two wins. Auckland was particularly impressive, scoring 24 goals and conceding none. Heavy rain and hail marred the first-round matches yesterday morning, but the weather improved in the afternoon and the organisers are confident they can accommodate all matches at Porritt Park for the remainder of the week.

Squash Canterbury squash players fared well in the finals of the New Zealand age group championships in Auckland yesterday. Joanne Milne, who won an open junior tournament earlier this year, won the under 19 girls’ singles after being taken to five sets by Kathryn Leaborn (Auckland). In an all Canterbury final, Stuart Davenport beat his Burnside team-mate, Gary Bushell, In three sets in the under 15 boys final. Another Burnside player, Chris Wasley, from an unseeded position reached the final of the under 19 boys singles, but he was beaten in four sets by the sixth seeded Kevin Hannan (Wellington). The score was 9-10, 9-3, Sheryl Clarke (Palmerston North) impressed as a rising star when she easily took the under 17 girls title. Two Rotorua players, Susan Devoy and Robert Wyatt, excelled by winning both titles in the under 13 section. They were the top seeds. Deborah Kelsall (Manurewa). ranked No. 2 in the under 15 age group, won the title.
