Theseus due for winning turn

Special correspondent Auckland i After three meritorious Iruns for second, Theseus fully deserves a winning turn and he stands a firstrate chance of gaining it in the Cambridge Trotting Cup tonight. Theseus was beaten in the closest of finishes over one mile on the first night of the Cambridge meeting last Friday. He went under by half a head to the good mare, Via Veneece, after working hard for a good way. He sat parked out in the middle stages and then held the lead from the 400 m until run down just short of the post. Theseus will start from the unruly position on the 10m mark. He has not been the best of beginners from a stand in the past but this season he seems to have settled down reasonably well.

At his two earlier attempts, Theseus was just beaten by Ginger Megs at Alexandra Park on August 13 and then runner-up to Danty Tudor there six nights later. Theseus’s chances will be assisted by the withdrawal yesterday of Via Veneece, which is being reserved for [the Franklin meeting next Friday. Majestic Heir, if allowed to dictate his own rules in i front, will be a major threat. He won as he liked at | Claudelands and Alexandra Park earlier this month, shaping as an up-and-coming stayer.

Beau Rios fought on well last Friday to hold third to Via Veneece and Theseus after making most of the pace. He would not have to improve much more to be a distinct prospect tonight. If there is a surprise, it could come from Chief Iron|side. A brilliant beginner from a stand, he does not need much racing before showing his best form and he could easily figure 1 i prominently. Hazy Days, a game and i impressive winner last Friday, should be the hardest to ;beat in the second leg of the :T.A.B. double. The Oakihampton pace. Lightly-tried, Hazy Days looks a four-year-old of fine potential and with his smart .turn of speed should bei | prominent all the way : | tonight. Moorfield Lad has an awk-| ward draw but he has been racing so solidly in recent starts that he should be up to overcoming this disadvantage. Coping Stone won nicely last Friday and she will have her share of support. Selections.— 4.15 p.m —Brooklands Hindi, cap: Life Sentence.
