Shipping News Dramatic slump in road tuñel traffic
Tunnel traffic took one o£ its! biggest slumps during July, ac-| cording to the general manager j 1 of the Christchurch-Lyttelton i Road Tunnel Authority (Mr L. E. Oliver). Nine thousand nine hundred! fewer vehicles passed through the toll plaza than in July, 1976, he said — a drop of 6.5 per cent, ' compared with a 5.8 per cent increase in July, 1976 over the ■ month the year before. “It was the largest drop in cattraffic in one month for years.” said Mr Oliver. He could not pin down the exact cause of the decline, although the loss of the Rangatira would; be a contributory factor. The traffic drop meant that' tunnel revenue decreased $2574. or 883 per day — 6.7 per cent! down on tlie previous July. : However July's nose-dive had; been arrested somewhat in Aug-! ust, said the authority's chairman (Mr V. G. Spiller). With three days still to go. ear| traffic was down 5.2 per cent, butl commercial traffic had shot upl 14.6 per cent. Total tunnel throughput was] down 2.3 per cent. The commercial traffic was helped by bulk cartages from' Lyttelton, including 8000 tonnes of sulphur and 10,500 tonnes of| phosphate.
